Day 1: Tulear – Ifaty 20km
Arrival in Tulear in the afternoon from where it is about an hour’s drive to the hotel in Ifaty. The landscape will be dominated by the spiny forest like cactus, different euphorbiacea and didieracea.
Day 2: Ifaty, beach
Many optional excursions are possible like whale watching. Ifaty is protected by a large coral reef which makes it an ideal place for scuba diving and snorkeling. In the afternoon your driver can take you to the village of Mangily where you can see the way the fishermen live.
Day 3: Ifaty – Isalo: 250 km
After breakfast we leave for Isalo National Park. The roadtrip brings us to the interior part of Madagascar which is the land of the Mahafaly. En route we will see many tombs of this tribe. Before arriving at Isalo, we pass through the national park of Zombitse, a transition zone between the dry south and the land of Isalo, a formation of continental sandstone rocks. It reminded us a lot of the mountains in South Africa! You will also pass through de ‘Plateaux des Baobabs’. There are 7 species of Baobabs in Madagascar whereas the African continent has only 2. Arrival in Isalo around noon.
Day 4: Isalo National Park
Day excursion to the National Park. Isalo is famous for its sandstone formations eroded by the rain and the wind. You will walk through beautiful scenery with your private guide. Bring your costume because you will go the natural swimming pools. This is the place of the Bara tribe. If you’re a lucky, you will be able to see the Lemur Catta. In the afternoon you can visit the village of Ranohira and visit the museum of the national park as well. You will enjoy a spectacular sunset at the Natural Window rock formation.
Day 5: Isalo – Ambalavao
Today you will drive in northern direction to Fianarantsoa. Today you will enter the rocky mountain chain of Andringitra which is a very picturesque remaining of Arabian civilisation. You will arrive in the fresh and green highland and the change of scenery is unforgettable. This part of Madagascar starts to look more Asian. In this area there’s also a wine industry and you will have the possibility to visit a winery as well as the paper workshop.
Day 6: Ambalavao – Ranomafana: 90 km
The early morning is reserved to visit the private Anja Park. This is a very succesful community park and you will have the chance to see different Lemur families. Ranomafana is situated in the eastern part of Madagascar and you will now experience a huge tropical forest. Ranomafana is also a thermal city where you can relax in the hot springs.
Day 7: Ranomafana National Park
This national park was created in 1991. A private park guide will take you on an expedition into the park. You will have the chance to see 12 species of Lemurs, the most important one being the ‘golden lemurs’ which has been discovered very recently. There are more than 100 bird species as well as reptiles, butterflies and other insects. In the afternoon you can visit Ranomafana village.
Day 8: Ranomafana – Antsirabe
Today you will drive through the highland which is characterised by rice paddies. You will make a stop in Ambositra which is the centre of the Malagasy wood carving industry.
Day 9: Antsirabe – Miandrivazo – Masiakampy: 430 km
Again a beautiful drive of ever changing landscape, rice fields, red soil and granite formations. You will arrive around noon in Miandrivazo and from there a transfer to Masiakampy. The boat will be waiting for you to sail to Tsiribihina and this is the beginning of your cruise! You will make a stop around Sahambano. The night will be spend camping on the bank of the river.
Day 10: Gorge of Bemaraha
You will enjoy breakfast on board. Today you will have the chance to see animals like Lemurs, crocodiles, birds and bats all along while you’re sailing. There will be a small trekking to the natural swimming pool under the waterfalls. Lunch on board and arrival at Berevo around 15h30. Visit of the village and you will camp again on the bank of the river.
Day 11: Coastal plain of Menabe – Tsimafana – Morondava: 100 km
Departure around 7h30. After the ‘Gorge of Bemaraha’ you will cross the plain of Menabe, characterised by the rice plantation. Along the river, the Sakalava tribes live and we can learn about their lives. From Tsimafana it’s a 3 hour drive to Morondava. You will make a photo stop in ‘Allee des Baobabs’ for a sunset photo. It’s a beautiful baobab lane.
Day 12: Morondava
Transfer to the airport and perhaps you will fly to another destination in Madagascar!
