A day out to Waterford Estate, Stellenbosch

Last Tuesday I was invited to join a day of fun in the sun organized by Land of Legends from KwaZulu-Natal. I only heard about it last minute so I had no idea what the day was going to bring, except some delicious food and wine.

We were all welcomed at the lovely Vineyard Hotel in Newlands by the owners or representatives of the different properties that belong to the Land of Legends collection. I thought we were all going to hop on a bus that would bring us to the wine lands but no, we all got into a vintage car, wow!! 2 people per car. It was such a treat. I shared the car with Greg from Phinda Private Game Reserve. He told me all about the fantastic work they do in the communities and in conservation, caring for the land, the people and the wildlife. I was very interested to learn because I’ve just started a course at Harvard University, Environmental Management of International Tourist Destinations. It’s the first course of its kind and I’m very excited to be part of it. However, I’m quite challenged when it comes to the assignments…. Anyway, back to the vintage car… We drove the coastal route through Muizenberg and it was such a pleasure not having to drive. And we were so lucky to have a super sunny day.

Arriving at Waterford Estate we were welcomed with wine, of course! The estate is breathtaking. The wine tasting by Kevin Arnold was very nice. After the tasting we all sat down and listened to a wonderful speech of Mick Goss from Hartford House. It was a great introduction to the province and its heritage & people. Lunch was prepared by Jackie Cameron and we were NOT disappointed. Beautiful dishes to tantalize all the taste buds. My favorite was the Springbok salad with Foie Gras.

Unfortunately, after lunch, I had to rush out and was taken back again in a great vintage car. This time, Flo was our driver. A Namibian guy in his ‘bakkie’ on the N2, couldn’t get enough of us: ‘Julle is prachtige vroumense in die meest prachtige kar’. (not sure if my Afrikaans spelling is correct, it might be more Dutch…).

Land of Legends consists of: Fordoun Hotel & Spa, Phinda Private Game Reserve, Hartford House, Rocktail Bay and The Beverly Hills Hotel. Their commonality lies in the celebration of African history, tradition and culture. These are FANTASTIC properties and I urge everyone to take at least a 10 day holiday and visit KwaZulu-Natal, home of the Zulu nation and experience the incredible hospitality. You can enjoy beach, bush, mountains, Spa and history all in one holiday. All are easy accessible and you can drive with you own car or rent a car from Durban.
