On Saturday I was invited to join the opening of Lungi´s B&B in Khayelitsha. The Township Khayeletsha is located only 25 km from Cape Town. Township tourism has been growing over the last couple of years and only in Khayelitsha there are already 19 B&B opened up. Lungi´s B&B offers two double rooms, a kitchen and a cozy living room to relax.
A traditional opening party within the Xhosa Environment is a lot of fun. Everything was decorated colorful and some refreshments were offered. Before the final cut of the ribbon to officially open the accommodation we had the pleasure to see a group of kids dancing and singing. It is great to see how much fun the children have to perform their traditional dances. Actually not only the kids love to perform but also the adults. Xhosa women just love to sing. If one of them is in the mood to share a song, she just starts to sing and the rest of the community will immediately join. The whole opening ceremony was a mixture of singing, dancing and official speeches, such as Vicky from Vicky´s B&B who shared encouraging words. Vicky founded the association for B&B´s in Khayelitsha of which Lungi´s became the 19th member.
It is quite amazing to see what people can do when they are just willing to work hard. Therefore I would just like to give a little inside of how this B&B became what it is now. Gladis, the owner of the B&B and mother of three kids, lost her husband 2 ½ years ago. Because of that she was the one who needed to support her family from that day on. To earn some money she decided to just ask random people if they need a cleaning lady. She was lucky to ring the right doorbell of Marijke Frijters. Marijke and Gladis became friends and they started to share ideas which at the end led to open up a B&B. Marijke supported her in any way she could. She helped her to find furniture, somebody who sets up the website etc. She was her guidance and she still is. All in all it took them two years to get to where they are right now…. The official opening day. I think this is a very impressive story to share especially when you see what they have achieved. I will definitely try out Lungi´s B&B and will of course let you know about my experience later on…..
