Last w-end I was so fortunate to be invited to a wedding in this beautiful nature reserve. I had visited already twice over the last few years and I think De Hoop is one of the most special areas in South Africa. It is well known for being the best land based whale watching spot in the world. For visitors to South Africa between July – Nov I would definitely include a visit to this reserve into the itinerary. It’s still very untouched and because of the long gravel road to get there, it will be quite unlikely to encounter many big tour busses.
We arrived the Friday night and we were invited for a potjie dinner around the fire in the boma. I loved the flower arrangements, all from indigenous flower called Fynbos. We DID use the blankets that were provided.
The wedding was at Die Opstal and the whole event took place under a massive tree. So beautiful!
After the ceremony we had champagne and snacks at another beautiful spot overlooking the water. It was a bit windy…
De Hoop Nature Reserve is also well known for the Whale Trail, a 5 day slackpacking (=backpacking without the schlep) in absolute pristine areas. The last 3 days you’ll walk along the coast and have the chance to see whales, dolphins, go for a snorkel and enjoy amazing bird life. Be sure to plan ahead because this trail is always booked out so if you’d like to go in 2011 you might already be late. Check with www.capenature.org when bookings open up for 2012 and put a note in your Calendar to make the booking. Cottages are all very well appointed and in great spots. There are porters to carry your luggage so you will only need to carry your day pack. You can braai every night and enjoy one of the most beautiful nature reserves in South Africa.
