What’s On Eatery in Watson Street, CBD Cape Town

It’s not often that one is impressed with nearly everything in a restaurant but yesterday we were. Wow!! What’s On Eatery, situated in a little side street between Bree & Loop Street certainly knows how to get things right. First of all the interior is beautiful without being too fancy, posh or over the top (don’t we have enough of those already??).
I felt like I was sitting in someone’s living room: warm, cosy, surrounded by pretty things.  Once we sat down the ower came to introduce himself. I thought that was SO nice. How often do owners just want to hide away and don’t really want to mingle with guests or are just too stressed out shouting at their staff? I thought: Trevor, well done! We chatted and chatted, turned out that I knew an old boyfriend of his,  my friend Fiona’s, who knows everyone also knew a few people. Anyway, bla bla bla. At a certain point I did think, ok, can we please just get on with things and get some wine, QUICKLY but no, it was all very funny and pleasant. I loved the menu. There were too many items on the menu that I would have liked to try which is great. They had Ceviche, Wow!! I just come back from Peru so I def. wanted to try the Ceviche. My other friend Manja, choose the French Onion soup and Fiona had the panfried calamari tubes. We loved all of it. The Ceviche was a very attractive dish, decent portion and very tasty. Between starter and main a little spoom of champagne and pine apple was served. I greatly appreciate those small surprises… For main course I choose the Beef Wellington with duck liver but I would also have enjoyed the Oxtail Risotto or the Lamb Shank. Like I said, it was a bit difficult to choose but I guess the duck liver did the trick. Dessert was easy to choose because there was a Dark chocolate & Hazelnut fondant on the menu so that was a no brainer. We had a lovely bottle of Springfield Whole Berry and the feast was complete. Did I already mention the incredible value for money? We had a 3 course dinner for ZAR 150. Welcome to Winter in Cape Town (18 degrees, sunny and warm today AND great restaurant specials as you can read…).
